Community police volunteers serving as night watchers across Eswatini are increasingly neglected and exposed to danger, with many, including Fraser, falling victim to violent gangs and retaliatory attacks. Their unwavering commitment to protecting neighborhoods like Mbhuleni in Matsapha is coming at a personal cost, often without adequate support from local authorities.
Fraser, a well-known community patrol volunteer, has endured numerous assaults by gangs terrorizing the area. Despite their efforts to curb crime, the fight remains daunting—drug lords and gangs often receive light sentences and return to reignite violence, further endangering residents and those working to maintain peace.
The persistent violence has severely impacted Fraser and others like him. Facing mounting threats and repeated attacks, Fraser has announced that he can no longer continue his duties as a community night watcher. “This is not a surrender, but a matter of survival,” he stated. “My safety and that of my family are at risk. I hope the authorities will eventually take meaningful steps to equip us with protection. For now, I will seek refuge elsewhere.”
A local ward councillor from Kwaluseni expressed concern over the situation, saying, “Fraser has been attacked multiple times, and his family has been terrorized. Relocating may be his last hope. As a community, we have lost a great pillar of safety.”
This troubling trend highlights the urgent need for improved support and protection for community volunteers who play a crucial role in maintaining order in areas plagued by crime. Without proper resources and security measures, their efforts risk being rendered futile, leaving communities vulnerable and unprotected.
